7 Common UK Student Visa Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)
Why Visa Errors Are Costly
A UK Student Visa rejection does not just mean delay — it can mean missing your course start date, losing your university offer, forfeiting a non-refundable tuition deposit, and waiting up to 12 months before your next opportunity to apply. With so much at stake, understanding the most common pitfalls is essential.
Mistake 1: Not Meeting the 28-Day Financial Requirement
Your bank statements must show you have held sufficient funds (tuition + living costs) for at least 28 consecutive days immediately before your application date. Transferring money in just before applying is not enough — UKVI checks the history of your account, not just the balance on a single day.
Mistake 2: Using an Unapproved English Language Test
UKVI only accepts Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) from an approved list. The IELTS for UKVI is approved; the general IELTS Academic or General Training is not. Check the UKVI website for the current approved list before booking your test.
Mistake 3: Applying Too Late
You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts (3 months from inside the UK). Standard processing takes 3 weeks, but delays are common during peak periods (July–September). Apply at least 3 months before your course start date to build in buffer time.
Mistake 4: CAS Number Errors
Your CAS reference number ties your visa to your specific course and institution. Using an expired CAS, entering it incorrectly, or applying for a different course than the one in your CAS are all grounds for refusal. Double-check every digit of your CAS number before submitting.
Mistake 5: Inconsistent Documents
All documents must be consistent with each other. If your bank statement shows a different name than your passport, UKVI will query it. If your CAS letter lists a different course than your offer letter, this creates red flags. Review all documents as a set before submitting.
Mistake 6: Incorrect Financial Source
Funds must be in your own name or your parents' names (with a letter confirming they are supporting you). Third-party funds from unrelated individuals are generally not accepted without strong justification.
Mistake 7: Not Keeping Copies of Everything
Always keep copies of your complete visa application, all submitted documents, payment receipts, and your biometric appointment confirmation. If your visa is delayed or refused, these records are essential for resolving the issue quickly.
